Tichigan Lake

Tichigan Lake is a premier all-sports lake in southeastern Wisconsin, offering boating, fishing, kayaking, and year-round recreation. Connected to the scenic Fox River, it provides miles of navigable waterways, beautiful natural surroundings, and a relaxed waterfront lifestyle just a short drive from Milwaukee and Chicago.

Tichigan Lake itself is just 268 acres, but the combined water surface of Tichigan Lake, 108-acre Buena Lake, and the 756-acre impounded stretch of the Fox River totals over 1,100 acres. That's the key thing most people don't realize at first glance — the lake on paper is modest, but the navigable waterway system it belongs to is substantial.

It has a maximum depth of 63 feet and is located in Racine County. The average depth is just 6 feet, and the water is moderately clear. That shallow average depth, combined with good weed cover, is a big part of what makes it such productive fishing water.

This is the heart of understanding Tichigan. The lake doesn't exist in isolation it's the centerpiece of a man-made impoundment system rooted in 19th-century engineering.

In 1838, a dam was built on the Fox River in Waterford, approximately 4 miles downstream from the current wildlife area, which created the lake that now abuts the marsh. That single dam is what created everything.

A major dam in Waterford forms a 1,200-acre navigable waterway, one of the busiest in southeastern Wisconsin. The river is generally navigable from the Iron Bridge in Tichigan, just south of Big Bend, down to the dam. The river connects several small lakes in this section, including Tichigan Lake and the smaller Buena Lake. The entire area  connected lakes and the Fox River is often referred to collectively as Tichigan Lake.

The Waterford Dam, located in the Village of Waterford at the south end of Buena Lake, creates all three water bodies. Except for the 1,500-acre Tichigan Wildlife Area, which encompasses the northern section of the impoundment basin, the approximately 24 miles of shoreline are private.

One important geographic note: the Waterford Impoundment and the Fox River, located on the west part of Racine County, drain into the Mississippi River system not Lake Michigan, even though they're in southeastern Wisconsin. It's a counterintuitive watershed divide.

The Fox River itself is not just a feeder  it's a paddling corridor. Paddlesports enthusiasts frequently approach Tichigan Lake via the Fox River, which is navigable for several kilometers with a few simple portages. Outfitters like Fox River Landing have historically offered canoe rentals and shuttles for multi-hour trips along the river into the lake system.

Why People Go To Tichigan Lake

1. Fishing

This is the primary draw. Bluegill, largemouth bass, northern pike, smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish are all regularly caught, since the water is shallow and has good weed cover. The Fox River's incoming stream mouths and peaceful sections are also home to brook and brown trout.

The waters around the Waterford Dam are locally famous for walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern pike, with the varied depths and structures provided by the dam creating ideal habitat for trophy-sized catches.

Bass tournaments are held regularly across the Waterford Impoundment, and ice fishing is a winter staple — every winter, ice fishers flock to the impoundment.

2. Boating and Water Sports

Boating leisure reigns supreme on the Waterford Impoundment, offering water activities such as skiing, tubing, sailing, and power boating, with pontoon boats a common sight for summer soirees and lakeside gatherings. The 1,100-acre connected waterway gives boaters real room to roam — not common for a lake in this price range.

3. Wildlife and Birding

The 1,562-acre Tichigan Wildlife Area is the largest and most diverse wildlife property in Racine County, with habitat types including grasslands, cattail marsh, oak woodland, wet meadow, open oak woods, fens, agricultural fields, shallow marsh, pine plantation, and upland and lowland shrubs.

The shallow lake, wetland, and marsh edge habitats are excellent for viewing wetland bird species such as great egrets, least bittern, terns, teal, wood duck, mallard, Wilson's phalarope, white-rumped sandpiper, kingfisher, rails, white pelican, bald eagle, osprey, and mergansers. An osprey platform was installed in 2016, and the platform has had an active nest since 2017.

4. Hunting

Hunters can pursue game species like deer, turkey, stocked pheasants, small game, doves, and waterfowl, and have access to the only leased VPA site in Racine County.

5. Paddling

With minimal current in the village stretch, the Fox River is exceptionally beginner-friendly. A popular route involves launching at the village center and paddling north toward the Tichigan Wildlife Area for a deep-nature experience. Kayak groups — including at least one all-female group organized through the WWMD  paddle the lake regularly through the summer.
